LUMBAR SPINE DISCHARGE INSTRUCTIONS

Call your physician’s office the day of discharge for an appointment about three weeks from now. Until then, follow the guidelines(FAQ):

  1. Activity the first week is lying down and walking.  Keep sitting to a minimum.  At the most, sit for 20 minutes at a time.
  2. Take only those new medications prescribed by your doctor.  If you need any others, call the office.
  3. Resume your normal diet.  But avoid constipating and binding foods.  If needed, please take a stool softener or Metamucil.
  4. Avoid soaking your incision in a tub bath or pool for three weeks. Showering is permitted, typically, two days after your incision is free of drainage.  Allow water to run across the incision, but do not scrub or soak the incision in the shower.  The steri-strips edges may begin to peel up after two weeks and can be removed at that time.
  5. The ride home in the front seat of the car – do not drive.  If possible, recline the seat to relieve pressure on your back.  If the ride home exceeds 20 minutes, stop and walk around for a few minutes every 20 minutes.  Minimize riding in the car for three weeks.  If necessary, you may drive to the corner store in 1 week.  Avoid any significant driving for three weeks.
  6. Sit only in straight hard backed dining room chairs, preferably one with arm rests.  Do not sit longer than 20 minutes at a time.  Get up and walk around after every sitting period.
  7. Frequent walks with good posture – indoors and outdoors – but avoid the rough ground, throw rugs, waxed or wet floors.  Relax and make your steps the same length on each side.  Gradually, increase your walking distance daily – progress to one mile a day after a week and up to 2 miles a day after two weeks.
  8. Avoid sudden twisting, turning or bending.  Never bend from the waist.  Squat if necessary to pick up something from the floor.  Avoid unusually soft or low seats.
  9. Use a firm mattress or bed board under the mattress if possible.
  10. Avoid sex for two weeks.
